When Tony Romo went down with a broken collarbone, the Dallas Cowboys turned to Brandon Weeden as the starting QB. It was a move that was never going to work, as illustrated by the following gifs.
Cleveland Browns fans already knew Weeden wasn't the answer, but it's not like the Cowboys had many other options when Romo went down. Had Romo remained healthy, I can't shake the feeling that the Cowboys would be at least 4-1. The team dealt a 2017 fifth rounded in exchange for the Bills' 2017 seventh rounder and veteran Matt Cassel and it's time for the team to hand things over to Cassel. Here are four reasons why Matt Cassel needs to be named the starting QB for the Dallas Cowboys.
4. Weeden Isn't The Problem, But He's Not The Solution
It's unfair to blame Weeden for all of the Cowboys' losses, but he hasn't been the answer to the Cowboys' woes either. He's relied heavily on checkdowns, and hasn't gone deep very often. Sure, he's completing 72 percent of his passes, but they've all been very easy, short throws. The Cowboys aren't going to win games with Weeden at QB, something the team must do if it wants to make a playoff run when Romo returns. Weeden isn't the answer, so it's time to make a change.
3. A Change, Of Any Kind, Is Needed
The Cowboys options are simple: continue trotting out Weeden and lose games, or play Cassel and hope something changes. The worst case is that the Cowboys continue to lose games, which is the likely outcome with Weeden at QB. The Cassel experiment might not work out, but the Cowboys need to try SOMETHING to turn around their season. Kellen Moore isn't a realistic option, so that just leaves Cassel.
2. Cassel Knows The Offense
It takes time to learn an NFL offense, which is why Cassel was inactive for several games. However, Jason Garrett says Cassel now knows enough of the offense, which means its time to give him a chance at running the team. There is no longer the issue of Cassel not knowing the plays, so it's Cassel time to shin.
1. Higher Upside With Cassel
Do I think Cassel is a great QB? Absolutely not. Heck, I'm not even sure if he's good enough to get the Cowboys winning again, but at least he's proven he has some ability. He's had mild success in the NFL, and emphasis on mild, with the Chiefs, Vikings and Patriots. There isn't a single season Weeden can point to and claim success. With Cassel at QB, the Cowboys at least have a chance to win some games.
