The Dallas Cowboys missed the playoffs last season, but that was due in large part to injuries to QB Tony Romo. The Cowboys are expected to return to the playoffs this season, but need a few players to step up this season for that to happen.
Each year, teams expect players to step up and play key roles. Sometimes, the player in question makes the leap from backup to role player, or even to starter. Sometimes, a player goes from role player to key starter or borderline star. So which players are the Cowboys counting on this year to step up? We've put together four of the most likely candidates below.
4. FS Byron Jones
Jones played really well last year for the Cowboys. He played several roles, including safety outside corner and nickel. But the Cowboys are going to move him to free safety this year and they need him to thrive in the role, allowing the team to bench J.J. Wilcox. Jones showed great promise last year, but now it's time for him to be even better.
3. WR Terrance Williams
Last year was supposed to be Williams' breakout season. He was fresh off an eight touchdown season and all signs pointed to his third year being his best. That wasn't the case. Dez Bryant went down with an injury and Williams struggled as the No. 1 WR, although the terrible QB play hurt him. With Romo now healthy, it's time for Williams to become a reliable No. 2 WR. He's shown flashes with big plays, but isn't consistent enough yet. He's in a contract year, and it might be now or never for Williams.
2. DE Benson Mayowa
Mayowa is still a bit of an unknown. A UDFA out of Idaho, he played for the Raiders the last two seasons. He's recorded just two career sacks. There's pass rushing potential with the 6-foot-3, 240-pound Mayowa, and it's why the Cowboys gave him a three-year, $8.25 million deal. The Cowboys are hurting for DEs, especially with Randy Gregory suspended for the first four games and DeMarcus Lawrence facing one as well. Someone will need to get to the QB, especially early in the season. Unless last year's fifth round pick Ryan Russell, who has hardly played, fills that role, the Cowboys are going to have to bank on Mayowa.
1. CB Morris Claiborne
This is a common theme isn't it? The Cowboys traded up to take Claiborne No. 6 overall in the 2012 Draft. He's been a bust so far and is back in Dallas on a cheap, prove-it deal. Claiborne had his best season last year, but he still wasn't that great. He's battled injuries throughout his career and that's been a major issue for the team. He's the No. 3 corner right now, and will play outside when Orlando Scandrick shifts to nickel. With a severe lack of proven depth, the Cowboys are counting on Claiborne to stay healthy and contribute
