Andre Marriner to take charge of first FA Cup match to use Video Assistant Referee technology with Neil Swarbrick set to monitor TV screens during Brighton vs Crystal Palace

Andre Marriner will take charge of the first competitive football match in England to use Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology.

The FA Cup third-round tie between bitter rivals Brighton and Hove Albion and Crystal Palace at the Amex Stadium on January 8 will use video replays in a first for this country.

Marriner will take charge of the match, while Neil Swarbrick will serve as the Video Assistant Referee monitoring the game on television monitors, assisted by Peter Kirkup.

Under a protocol laid down by the International Football Association Board the only eligible match-changing incidents that can be overturned by video review are: awarding goals, penalty or no penalty, direct red cards (not second yellow cards) and cases of mistaken identity.
