McNeese State and UL Lafayette have played each other just once in the past 30 years. What has changed since the beginning of this rivalry in the 1950s?
Starting in 1951, the Cajun Crown was born. This game we used to know as a major rivalry in the deep south between UL Lafayette and McNeese State was once played every year, but changes in the divisions the two programs played in caused a once great rivalry to fall cold.
The two programs started playing in 1951 and continued to do so annually up until 1987. In 1982, McNeese State dropped down to Division I-AA, while the Ragin' Cajuns remained in Division I-A.
