A shaky defensive effort, two deflections in front of goalkeeper Steve Clark and a questionable red card doomed visiting Crew SC on Wednesday night during a 3-2 loss to the first-place Philadelphia Union at Talen Energy Stadium.
It sent the Crew (3-5-3) into an extended summer break on a sour note, one made far less palatable by the fashion in which it failed to win on the road for the seventh straight game.
