On a Saturday morning recently in Obetz, Brad Stuver was getting ready for his zillionth practice session as Steve Clark’s primary backup.
It was the tail end of Stuver’s fourth season as a professional, a career in which he had persevered while waiting for a chance to play in a game that mattered. Then Crew SC coach Gregg Berhalter tapped him on the shoulder to deliver the news: After having started every game since being acquired for the 2013 season, Clark’s streak of 100 consecutive starts was ending. When the Crew played the next day at the New York Red Bulls, Stuver would stand between the posts.
