Tasked with the complicated puzzle of reconstructing his back line this offseason, Crew SC coach and sporting director Gregg Berhalter kicked off the New Year by finding an important piece.
The club made official Tuesday the acquisition of 26-year-old Ghanaian center back Jonathan Mensah as Crew SC’s second designated player.
Mensah, who most recently played for FC Anzhi Makhachkala of the Russian Premier League, was acquired for an undisclosed transfer fee. Mensah joins midfielder Federico Higuain as one of two designated players currently on the Crew’s roster.
“We wanted to put ourselves in a position to land a defender that we thought would be a very good performer not only now but in the future.
