Crew SC's tumultuous season ended in a 4-1 loss to host New York City this afternoon.
Columbus finished ninth in the 10-team MLS Eastern Conference, while New York City finished second to earn a first-round playoff bye.
The Crew had already been eliminated from playoff contention heading into the game, missing the postseason for the first time in three seasons under coach and sporting director Gregg Berhalter.
Ola Kamara's team-leading 16th goal tied the score at 1 in the 59th minute, but New York City responded with goals in quick succession by Jack Harrison (75th minute) and Khiry Shelton (77th) for a 3-1 lead.
