After a disappointing Round of 16 exit in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday, Columbus Crew SC returned to Major League Soccer play to face off against another MLS original in Sporting Kansas City. It was a battle of the 10th place seeds in either conference at MAPFRE with Sporting KC emerging victorious by a score of 1-0.
Columbus got off to a good start in the match, earning two corner kicks within the first 10 minutes. Even beyond the set pieces, the Black & Gold created opportunities.
Sporting looked for a penalty kick call in the 11th minute after defender Waylon Francis potentially took down Gerso inside the penalty area.
