The Mountain West is now down to five bowl game tie-ins as of Wednesday.
The San Diego Bowl Game Association, which oversees both the San Diego Country Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl and the Holiday Bowl, announced its board voted to focus on just one bowl game, ending a 12-year run for the Poinsettia Bowl.
Both were played at Qualcomm Stadium on back-to-back weeks in December. The Mountain West was contracted to the game, most recently to face a MAC team. The Holiday Bowl will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2017.
In a release announcing the news, San Diego County Supervisor Ron Roberts said it was clear that the focus "should be on the popular and lucrative Holiday Bowl.
