LAS VEGAS — Bret Gilliland knew the stance from the viewpoint of the Mountain West. When he arrived to meet with members of college football's competition committee, the Mountain West's deputy commissioner was glad to see he wasn't alone.

What it came down to really was the language used last year, Gilliland said.
