The cockroach has been around in some form for about 300 million years, as the repulsive insect’s proven to be an extraordinarily resilient species.
So, the Rockies — looking for something to band them together amid the disappointment of a last-place season — have recently taken up association with the Spanish word for the pest.
“‘Cucarachas’ means to be a grinder,” Ryan McMahon explained. “This is a tough game in a 162-game season, so you’ve got to grind it out sometimes. There’s going to be ups-and-downs, so it’s being about a hard-nosed player and coming to the ballpark every day, ready to work … It’s about not quitting.
