DENVER -- Manager Walt Weiss was ejected in the fourth inning and outfielder Ryan Raburn was tossed in the sixth during Monday night's series opener against the Pirates on a night when the Rockies vehemently disagreed with home-plate umpire Lance Barrett's strike zone.
By the time there were two outs in the fifth, the normally aggressive Rockies had absorbed five strikeouts looking against Pirates starter Jeff Locke, who had a 1-0 lead and just three swinging strikeouts. Nolan Arenado, who has taken just 26 looking K's in his four-year career, took one in the first inning and Raburn protested the next.
