The Rockies on Friday optioned struggling left-handed pitcher Tyler Matzek to Triple-A Albuquerque and called up pinch-hitting first baseman Wilin Rosario.
Matzek on Wednesday struggled through more than two innings against Arizona, allowing six walks while getting just six outs before he was pulled by manager Walt Weiss against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He became the 10th pitcher since 2001 to walk six or more batters in two or fewer innings to start a game.
Rosario had been sent to Triple-A in April to make room for John Axford, who has taken over closing for the Rockies since reliever Adam Ottavino underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery on Thursday.
