Colorado’s series opener against the Padres on Monday began ugly, glimmered with hope for a brief moment, and then turned into a complete dumpster fire as the Rockies were routed 13-5 at Coors Field.
The club’s fourth loss in its past five games began as the previously steady Chad Bettis, the team’s best starter of 2018 entering the night, yielded four runs on four hits in the first inning.
But the Rockies’ offense struck right back in the bottom of the frame, also tagging the Padres’ Bryan Mitchell for four runs. Nolan Arenado and Trevor Story each slugged two-run homers to left, Arenado’s coming on a line drive and Story’s on a powerful, hanging 464-foot blast that he admired from the box.
