Tom Murphy, No. 12 PuRP, will make his major league debut tonight in Seattle. The 24 year-old Murphy began the season in Double-A, but he earned a promotion to Triple-A Albuquerque mid-season. Across those levels, Murphy hit .256/.314/.490. He also hit 20 home runs. Those numbers aren't bad, but Murphy also sported a 28.6 percent strikeout rate and a 6.5 percent walk rate. The walk rate is fine, but that K rate won't play unless he becomes a much better hitter than he has been throughout his time in the minors.
Ultimately though, Murphy's defense will prove to be more important than his offense.
