The Colorado Rockies are now 52 games into the 2024 season and are once again locked into an all-too-familiar situation: the outfield is crowded, an under-performing veteran is getting far too much playing time, and there are tough decisions to make when it comes to this organization’s future.
The Rockies entered spring training set for a fourth outfielder competition between veterans Bradley Zimmer and Sam Hilliard. However, they decided neither were the answer and opted to trade for 31-year-old Jake Cave from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for cash considerations.
Cave is a speedy and versatile defender with his glove, but his bat has never really evolved since he broke into the league.
