It’s not often that DJ LeMahieu, the Rockies’ quiet second baseman, gets caught up in controversy, let alone a war of words on the baseball diamond. But that’s what happened Sunday afternoon during the Rockies’ 9-7 loss to the Chicago Cubs at Coors Field.
Cubs infielder Javy Baez accused LeMahieu of stealing the catcher’s signs while LeMahieu was on second base in the third inning. Baez then attempted to block LeMahieu’s view between pitches as the two played a game of hide and seek near the bag. Baez said LeMahieu was signaling to hitter Nolan Arenado.
“We’ve got to protect our team, our pitchers,” told Cubs reporters.
