Black, 59, compiled 649-713 record as San Diego's manager from 2007 through 65 games into the 2015 season. Black's best years were 2007, when the Padres went 89-74 and fell to the Rockies, 8-7, in 13 innings at Coors Field in a classic game 163 to determine the NL Wild Card; and 2010, when San Diego went 90-72 and barely missed the playoffs. The 2010 season marked the Padres' most victories in a season since 1998, when they won 98 and went to the World Series.

Black spent the 2016 season as a special assistant to Angels general manager Billy Eppler.
