Saunders: Rockies can’t afford to whiff on upcoming big decisions

I was talking to a prominent agent the other day.

“What,” I asked him, “is the perception about the Rockies around the league? Probably three or four years from being a contender?”

“More like five, or more,” he replied.

That helps explain why shortstop Trevor Story will become a free agent at the end of the season, unless he’s traded before then. He sees the writing on the wall. Story might not be as vocal as former teammate Nolan Arenado, but his desire to win burns white-hot, so he’ll look to sign with a team he believes can contend.
