Saunders: Nolan Arenado’s $30 million bid contract is a line in the sand

If it were just a few years ago, Nolan Arenado and the Rockies would have already put a bow on his contract.

Instead, the possibility looms that the two sides will head to arbitration next month to settle matters as the All-Star third baseman enters what could be his final season in Colorado. Keep in mind that the Rockies have taken players to arbitration just four times in franchise history.

Arenado is seeking $30 million for one season, while the Rockies want to pay him $24 million. It’s Monopoly money that’s hard for fans to fathom, but that’s a topic for another column.
