Rockies waste Jon Gray's five shutout innings in loss to Padres

SAN DIEGO — Jon Gray hung back behind his Rockies teammates Tuesday evening during batting practice at Petco Park.

Gray leaned against a bat on the grass in front of the visitors' dugout, taking it all in and perhaps pondering: Would this be the night he got his first major-league victory?

The rookie right-hander from Oklahoma pitched well enough to win, throwing five shutout innings in a 2-1 loss to the San Diego Padres.

“His fastball command really settled in after the first inning,” Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. “He pitched in and out with the fastball and threw some good sliders.
