SAN DIEGO — “Would the Rockies really trade Nolan Arenado?”
I’ve been asked that question numerous times here at baseball’s winter meetings. The queries have come from fellow baseball writers, some agents and even a couple of former players.
My gut reaction was to say “no way.” After all, it was less than a year ago that Arenado signed an eight-year contract extension worth $260 million that gave him the largest per-year salary of any position player in baseball. Plus, Arenado has a full no-trade clause in his contract. Plus, he can opt out of the deal after the 2021 season.
