Rockies sticking with Wade Davis as closer, but bullpen needs to get right

PHOENIX — The Rockies’ bullpen, a team strength until a massive meltdown during the just-completed four-game scorefest with the Padres, needs a quick fix. But pulling right-hander Wade Davis from the closer role is not a solution.

At least not in Bud Black’s view.

The Rockies’ manager made that clear prior to Tuesday night’s game against the Diamondbacks. Black did say that Davis, along with his fellow relievers, must start throwing competitive strikes. Black, however, dismissed the idea that pitchers were “nibbling.”

“It depends on what term you want to use, but when games like that are happening in real time, at some point, for some pitchers, there might be the feeling of ‘Man, I have to make some pitches here,’ ” Black said.
