Quantifying the Rockies’ terrible starting pitching is easy. What’s difficult is seeing how things will improve much next year, knowing that the team rarely signs free-agent starting pitchers.
How bad has it been? Colorado’s rotation ranked last in the National League in nearly every significant category: ERA (6.04), batting average against (.290), home runs allowed (141), WHIP (1.53) and strikeouts per nine innings (7.57), entering play this weekend.
How disappointing has it been? Consider that the 2018 starters posted a 4.17 ERA, the second-best mark in franchise history. Now it appears the Rockies are starting over.
