Rockies’ shortstop Jose Iglesias, who replaced Trevor Story, has been a bargain pickup

When the Rockies lost power-hitting shortstop Trevor Story to free agency, they searched for a veteran who could give them a solid glove and some production at the plate.

One month into the season, Jose Iglesias has filled the need.

“As a defender, he’s experienced, calm and he doesn’t rattle,” manager Bud Black said. “He’s got great hands, and his baseball time clock is great. Offensively, he has bat-to-ball skills and a low strikeout rate. He’s pesky. It’s been similar to what we knew when we signed him.”

Iglesias signed a one-year, $5 million deal with the Rockies, essentially to play short until prospect Ezequiel Tovar is ready for the majors.
