The Rockies optioned Ryan McMahon to Triple-A and called up utility infielder Ryan McMahon, the team announced. In order to make room on the 40-man roster for Castro, the Rockies placed reliever Zac Rosscup on the 60-day disabled list.
This is perhaps the second transaction in two days that may make the Rockies offense, which is currently the worst in baseball, even worse. While yesterday’s move to place DJ LeMahieu on the disabled list may not have been a choice, today’s move demonstrates more agency. It also further shows the team’s commitment to playing the club’s veterans over younger players, and it also raises the question of why McMahon was even on the team if he was just going to sit most games and then get optioned on May 1.
