Rockies’ offseason in limbo as they wait for free-agent dominoes to fall

Baseball’s hot stove season has been lukewarm, at best.

The Rockies bucked that trend, aggressively signing relievers Wade Davis, Bryan Shaw and Jake McGee to contracts worth a combined $106 million. Still, there is work to be done if the Rockies want to return to the playoffs, and compete for their first National League West title.

Why is offseason action still simmering, just five weeks before pitchers and catcher report to spring training? There are myriad reasons, ranging from this year’s mediocre free-agent class, to teams’ reluctance to spend big, to super agent Scott Boras’ influence on the market.
