Among the bevy of coaching hires the Colorado Rockies announced on Thursday is the intriguing presence of two hitting coaches — Duane Espy and Jeff Salazar. Rox general manager Jeff Bridich had a witty explanation for the decision:
“Traditionally we’ve struggled to score runs,” Bridich joked on a conference call with reporters, “so we need all the help we can get.”
There was a brief pause before Bridich clarified he was joking. That might tell you all you need to know.
The truth is, looking at their park-adjusted offense, the Rockies have struggled to score runs at times.
