Rockies name “Honorary Bat Girl” for Mother’s Day game on Sunday against Milwaukee

As part of the MLB’s “Going To Bat Against Breast Cancer” initiative that’s traditionally celebrated on Mother’s Day, the Rockies named Lakewood resident Rochelle McKenzie as their Honorary Bat Girl for Sunday’s game against the Brewers.

The Honorary Bat Girl program began in 2009, and for the first time this year, teams were allowed to hand-select a representative who has “demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to battling breast cancer,” per an MLB release.

In 2016, McKenzie faced an aggressive form of breast cancer without any health insurance. The 31-year-old was eventually able to gain coverage thanks to a grant from Susan G.
