Stephen Strasburg, the powerful right-hander driving toward the front of the National League Cy Young race merely two weeks ago, came to Coors Field trying to get right.
After beginning the season 15-1, the Nationals’ ace had surrendered 10 combined runs in his previous two starts heading into Wednesday’s rubber-match series finale against the Rockies. The last time he had pitched at Colorado’s ballpark, almost a year to the day earlier, he had tossed seven scoreless innings and gave up only two hits.
It’s safe to say the Rockies were a more hostile opponent this time around.
