The Rockies had to wait … and wait … and wait for their turn in the Major League Baseball draft Monday. By Tuesday, their picks unfolded in quick order, a breakneck procession of college pitchers and familiar names.
“It felt like being a little kid who got in trouble at school and had to sit in the corner while everybody else gets to go to recess,” said Bill Schmidt, Colorado’s director of scouting.
After the Rockies drafted prep power hitter Ryan Vilade out of Stillwater (Okla.) High School and University of Virginia right-handed pitcher Tommy Doyle in the second round Monday, they followed with eight more picks Tuesday, including four more college pitchers, two first basemen, a second baseman and a catcher.
