Rockies’ German Marquez loses no-hit bid in the ninth in masterpiece

Through eight innings Tuesday night, Rockies starter German Marquez was magical.

And though a ninth-inning single broke up his no-hit bid, which would’ve been only the second in team history, his performance drew hugs from his teammates and rowdy approval from the Rockies faithful.

The Rockies pounded the Pirates, 8-0, on a picturesque evening at Coors Field.

Long after the final out, Marquez raised his arms and tipped his hat to the fans who cheered through the suspense. They were appreciative of the effort, regardless of Ka’ai Tom’s history-spoiling single, a line drive to right field to start the ninth.
