The Rockies announced a few transactions Sunday morning that, while they don’t exactly amount to a “roster shakeup,” are definitely signs of moving on from non-contributors.
First, they designated Mark Reynolds for assignment. Whatever magic Reynolds rode from 2016 to 2018 that kept him on major league rosters ran out in 2019. Reynolds hit .170/.290/.311 in 162 plate appearances, which amounts to an adjusted batting like 54 percent below league average.
The Rockies selected the contract of left-handed reliever Sam Howard, who will take Reynolds’s spot on the 40-man roster. Howard will assume a role in the bullpen.
