The black smoke that billowed into the sky to the north of Coors Field, rising up nearly directly above the Rockies’ bullpen when viewed from home plate, seemed too ominous to be true. It was simply the result of a raging afternoon fire at a nearby recycling yard, not some foreshadowing of what was to come in Tuesday’s series opener against Arizona.
Oh, if only.
The black smoke ended up telling the story after all, as the Diamondbacks torched the Colorado relief combo of Jake McGee and Scott Oberg for four runs on two homers in the seventh en route to a 5-3 win over the Rockies at Coors Field.
