The Colorado Rockies have signed 27-year-old Alexi Amarista to a one year deal. With the starting roster pretty much set, Amarista looks to fill a utility role that seems more likely to be vacated by Daniel Descalso moving forward.
The light-hitting defensive minded shortstop spent the last five years with the San Diego Padres, accumulating an offensive slashline of .230/.276/.320, certainly nothing to write home about. Amarista likely comes in primarily as a backup and third base and will battle it out with Cristhian Adames over the primary infield backup role.
This move doesn’t move the needle much either way for the club but it is interesting to see the Rockies continue to give attention to their bench and depth, seemingly writing a few contingency plans for inevitable injuries.
