SAN DIEGO – Youth once again served the San Diego Padres well and doomed the Colorado Rockies on Friday night at Petco Park.
Rookie starter Cal Quantrill mystified the Rockies offense while rookie sensation Fernando Tatis Jr. continued his assault on Colorado pitching with a key two-run double as San Diego posted a 7-1 victory. Only Ian Desmond’s ninth-inning RBI groundout kept Colorado from being blanked for the sixth time this season.
Josh Naylor added a pinch-hit three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth off Colorado closer Scott Oberg to ensure Colorado’s fourth straight loss.
