First, the positive: Jon Gray was strong in his third career start. Gray threw 69 pitches, 50 of which went for strikes, over five innings. He allowed four hits and a run. He didn't walk a batter and struck out five. It was another encouraging outing for the young Rockies pitcher.
The Padres tagged Gray for a run in the first inning off of a couple of singles and a sacrifice fly. The Rockies, however, responded with a run in the bottom of the first. Charlie Blackmon doubled and later scored on a Carlos Gonzalez groundout.
