SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — It was 400 days ago that the Rockies traded third baseman Nolan Arenado to the St. Louis Cardinals.
In exchange for the star third baseman, as well as the $51 million they gave St. Louis to complete the deal, the Rockies received left-handed starting pitcher Austin Gomber, along with four prospects: infielders Elehuris Montero and Mateo Gil and right-handers Tony Locey and Jake Sommers.
The trade was viewed almost universally as a lopsided deal for St. Louis, but from the Rockies’ point of view, there are glimmers of hope.
Start with Gomber, who, after a rough start to the 2021 season, pitched well until running out of steam.
