Newman: From the salary sheet to the sabermetrics, Rockies aren’t a “Moneyball” team

If Billy Beane ran the Colorado Rockies, how satisfied would he be?

Amid baseball’s postponement, that’s the question on my mind this week after re-reading “Moneyball,” Michael Lewis’ classic 2003 book about how Beane and the Oakland A’s sparked a sabermetric revolution in the majors.

Above all, “Moneyball” teams use sabermetrics to understand players’ true value in the marketplace, and then stuff the roster with under-valued (read: controllable and cheap) players. That has long been the case in Oakland under the guidance of Beane, the A’s general manager from 1998 to 2016 and currently the team’s executive vice president of baseball operations.
