SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Wednesday morning started with a mariachi band at the Rockies' camp. But shortly thereafter, disappointed groans filled the air.
As former Rockies star and current front office special assistant Vinny Castilla -- a proud native of Mexico -- geared up for the finals of the team's pingpong tournament, a mariachi band strode into the clubhouse playing music in support.
Alas, Zach Wilson, the Rockies' player development director and left-handed whiz with the paddle, swept the final series, 2-0. The band, arranged by outfielder Gerardo Parra and endorsed by manager Bud Black, couldn't play in celebration -- although it did get to play a tune during a timeout.
