Jon Gray never pretended to be Al Roker, but those clouds that creeped up behind him Sunday at Coors Field were not in his forecast.

“It came out of nowhere,” the Rockies’ right-hander said. “I had no idea it was going to rain at all. It was a big surprise to me.”

Exactly one year after Colorado’s prized pitcher threw the game of his life, Gray was back on the mound, his momentum building against the same Padres he dominated last season. He struck out seven Padres, walked just one and needed just 63 pitches to cruise through five innings.
