Jon Gray, the Rockies’ homegrown right-hander who has become one of the most accomplished pitchers in Coors Field history, just might be sticking around.
Although Gray is scheduled to become a free agent at the end of the season, he’s repeatedly said he wants to remain in Colorado. Interim general manager Bill Schmidt, who hopes to be named the permanent GM this fall, said Friday that preliminary negotiations have begun on a new contract.
“We’re hopeful that Jon would like to stay here, which I believe he does, and that we’re going to be able to find a common ground,” Schmidt said after the Rockies bypassed any trade offers for Gray prior to Friday’s deadline.
