Year after year, fans show up to Coors Field with their fingers crossed, praying that their starting pitcher will last six or more innings and keep the Rockies in the ballgame. This bad habit has developed due to the fact that there has not been a true, bona-fide ace on the Rockies since the day Ubaldo Jimenez was shipped off to the Cleveland Indians. To make matters even worse, the top prospect the Rockies received in return, Drew Pomeranz, failed miserably at Coors Field, and is now thriving and rejuvenating his career with the San Diego Padres.
So, the Rockies front office recognized the team’s need for a true ace, but chose to take a different route.
