Jon Gray is experimenting from the mound but his Rockies manager wants something more simple

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Jon Gray split his fore and middle fingers and aligned them with the seams of a baseball. That is the look of his newfound changeup, a pitch he saw move in exciting fashion Friday at Salt River Field. It just didn’t produce the results he wanted.

The Rockies’ No. 1 starting pitcher has experimented with various windups and pitches this spring, looking to add something to his arsenal. He is gaining evidence of what works and what doesn’t.

“It didn’t go very well. But they have good action,” Gray said of his new two-seam changeup, the fourth pitch in his repertoire.
