TEMPE, Ariz. — Jon Gray fell behind the best player in baseball here Sunday afternoon and never flinched. The Rockies right-hander wanted an opportunity to stretch himself against Mike Trout.

In a 2-1 hitter’s count in the first inning, with a speedy runner on first base, Gray went right back to the strike zone with a slider down and away to Trout, the Angels’ all-star center fielder. It turned into an easy pop-up to right field.

“He’s not a guy who is going to chase a lot,” Gray said.
