If Cubs Manager Joe Maddon were MLB commissioner, he’d ban headfirst slides, put cages around the on-deck circles and mandate cup checks as players ran onto the field. Not really, but those were among the tongue-in-cheek rules suggestions that Maddon, still bitter about a call on Saturday, offered to increase player safety during a sarcastic rant before Sunday’s series finale against the Cardinals.
“I think we should consider now eliminating the headfirst slide to protect base runners, because that is really a dangerous slide,” Maddon said with a straight face, via USA Today.
