Jerry Schemmel wears saddle sores as badge of honor after Ride Across America

Jerry Schemmel has been a sportscaster for nearly 30 years, but he had an unusual complication when he took his seat in the Rockies radio booth Monday night: Saddle sores.

Schemmel took a brief hiatus from his radio responsibilities to do the Race Across America bike race with partner Brad Cooper, and they finished their 3,000-mile relay ride from Oceanside, Calif., to Annapolis, Md., Sunday around 3 a.m. It took them seven days, 14 hours, and 55 minutes while averaging nearly 17 mph.

Hence Schemmel's tender rear end.

"I'm going to be honest, they hurt," Schemmel said Monday while changing planes in Chicago en route to San Francisco to call the Rockies series in Oakland.
