Inside the rarity of the World Series showdown between Red Sox and Dodgers, who last met in Fall Classic in 1916

The Dodgers and the Red Sox face off in a rare showdown when two of baseball’s behemoths meet in the 114th World Series starting Tuesday night at Fenway Park.

The teams played once before in the Fall Classic, that in 1916, when the Red Sox beat the Brooklyn Robins (as the Dodgers were then known). The teams didn’t meet again until a 2002 interleague series, and have only played 15 times total in the 102 years since 1916.

Highlighting Boston’s 4-1 series defeat of the Robins in 1916 was 21-year-old pitcher Babe Ruth, who turned in a legendary performance by pitching a 14-inning complete game in the Boston’s dramatic Game 2 victory.
