German Marquez’s “easy cheese” gives Rockies pitcher potential of an ace

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — German Marquez’s 8-month-old-son is named Damian, but his nickname is “Easy Cheese.”

That’s the price you pay when you have a dad who could throw a 79 mph fastball at age 13, now fires a big-league heater that touches 98, and can break off a curveball that sends batters searching for a chiropractor.

“The first time I saw him pitch, the first two words that came to my mind were ‘easy cheese,’ ” Rockies pitching coach Steve Foster recalled.

Veteran catcher Chris Iannetta has one word to describe Marquez’s stuff: “Ridiculous.”
